OUR MISSION
In 2022 Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS) published a report that found a mere 4.81% of environmental professionals class themselves as people of colour (POC), which is a stark contrast to 12.64% across all other UK job sectors.
A resounding financial barrier POCs face to accessing this sector are the lack of paid internships. The SOS report reviled “just 11% of respondents from Black and POC backgrounds say they have volunteered for a club or group that helps the environment.”
People of colour are losing out on invaluable opportunities, networks, and career prospects as a result of the voluntary experience required to secure permanent positions. (Rudd et al, 2021;Cousins et al, 2009; Klein et al, 2011)
Thus, ‘The Conservation Equity Project’ is a community interest company with a simple goal; to increase Black British access to the conservation and wider green jobs sector by offering paid internships and career-focused mentoring.
COMMITMENTS
At the Conservation Equity Project, our mission is to reshape the landscape of the conservation and green jobs sector by fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for Black British individuals. We are committed to breaking down systemic barriers that hinder diversity in the field, ensuring that talent, passion, and dedication are the primary criteria for success.

3. Removing Volunteering Barriers
We actively work to dismantle the volunteering barrier, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds can access environmental activities without compromising financial stability.
4. Building Inclusive Networks
We create a supportive community where interns, mentors, and professionals connect, share knowledge, and build lasting networks to foster a sense of belonging.
5. Advocacy for Diversity and Equity
We advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within the conservation sector, challenging and changing systemic practices contributing to underrepresentation.
6. Continuous Learning and Improvement
We regularly assess and adapt our programs to meet the evolving needs of our community, striving for continuous improvement and relevance.
7. Transparency and Accountability
We operate with transparency, sharing progress reports and outcomes, inviting our community to hold us accountable for our commitments.
